Description: The Middle School English Teacher strives to develop students’ linguistic and functional competence in the English language so that they can use the language as a tool for communication, study, work, enjoyment and personal enrichment. He/she will collaborate with other members of the English team to plan integrated units and advisory activities, discuss students’ academic progress, plan and moderate assessments, and work together to promote the educational needs the students. Also serving as a homeroom teacher to one class, this position requires an acute understanding of the developmental uniqueness of the middle level learner and a desire to work with and advocate for this age group. While collaborating with fellow teachers under the direction of the Vice Principal and Principal, this candidate would need to embrace the Christ-centered mission of the school, seeking to nurture students in excellence, service and integrity. Capitalizing on the very respectful Chinese culture, this candidate would be expected to maintain a productive team and classroom while nurturing an encouraging, supportive relationship with students. Hong Kong Adventist Academy (https://www.hkaa.edu.hk) is a grade 1-12 school located on the wooded outskirts of Hong Kong city, overlooking the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known to be one of the safest cities in the world. On a shared campus with Hong Kong Adventist College, HKAA has about 200 students and nearly 50 faculty and staff. It is a full service academy with a dormitory whose focus is languages (English and Mandarin), character building and music. Our students represent a strong Adventist presence, supporting a mission-driven focus for our non-Adventist students. Our middle school students come from all over the world (China, Malaysia, Japan, India, UK, US, etc.) so this candidate must enjoy and thrive in a variety of cultures, accents and people.
Experience: A bachelor's degree in education is necessary. An advanced degree in English is desirable. At least 3 years of teaching experience is highly desirable, with strong knowledge of English at the required levels of study. This candidate must have experience in managing classrooms with diverse students and different learning abilities (including students with special needs).
