Description: The 5th Grade Homeroom Teacher aims to prepare 5th graders for success in the middle school and beyond. With outstanding curriculum knowledge, he/she will plan integrated units and advisory activities, discuss students' academic progress, plan and moderate assessments, and work collaboratively to promote the explicit educational needs of the 5th graders. Recognizing students' academic strengths and weaknesses early on, he/she will use these insights to plan general and targeted curriculum. Besides addressing the welfare, discipline and educational needs of each student as a homeroom teacher, this candidate would need to embrace the Christ-centered mission of the school, seeking to nurture students in excellence, service and integrity. Capitalizing on the very respectful Chinese culture, this teacher would be expected to maintain a productive classroom while nurturing an encouraging, supportive relationship with students. Hong Kong Adventist Academy (https://www.hkaa.edu.hk) is a grade 1-12 school located on the wooded outskirts of Hong Kong city, overlooking the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known to be one of the safest cities in the world. On a shared campus with Hong Kong Adventist College, HKAA has about 200 students and nearly 50 faculty and staff. It is a full service academy with a dormitory whose focus is languages (English and Mandarin), character building and music. Our students represent a strong Adventist presence supporting a mission-driven focus for our non-Adventist students. Our elementary students come from all over the world (China, UK, India, Japan, Myanmar, US, etc.) so this candidate must enjoy and thrive in a variety of cultures, accents and people.
Experience: A bachelor's degree in education is necessary. An advanced degree is desirable. At least 3 years of teaching experience is highly desirable. Candidate must be capable of teaching English, Math, Science, Art, Social Studies and Bible to 5th graders. Candidate must also have an acute understanding of childhood development concept, theories, and practices. Functioning in an environment where some students are working toward grade-level English proficiency, the candidate must be willing and able to provide differentiated instruction to facilitate student achievement.
