Description: Mountain View Academy seeks a qualified high school Chaplain/Bible teacher to join our school family. As Chaplain, the individual will work closely with the principal to foster a positive school culture that emphasizes the spiritual growth of students, faculty, and staff. The Chaplain is a leader in developing/updating the school’s spiritual action plans and spiritual focus/theme for each school year. As a Bible teacher, this person teaches all Bible classes using the Encounter Bible curriculum. Additional roles include planning and leadership for the all-school retreat, daily chapel services, coordinating each semester’s Week of Spiritual Emphasis, organizing community service activities (including a local mission trip each March), and mentoring student leaders.

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to the Mountain View Academy campus, uniquely located on a city block within walking distance of downtown Mountain View, CA.  This setting provides many public transportation options, allowing easy access to many Bay Area locations. MVA recently celebrated its 100th year of providing Christian education in the Bay Area. Our student body reflects the vibrancy and diversity of our community. The MVA Chaplain plays an active role in our local SDA community, connecting with the pastors of our 20 constituent churches and planning student outreach activities with our SDA elementary schools.

Required Experience

Candidates will be dedicated to the mission of Adventist Education, embrace the opportunity to work in the culturally diverse California Bay Area, and enjoy engaging with high school students and their parents in a goal- and mission-oriented academic environment. Applicants must be active Seventh-day Adventist church members eligible to work in the United States. The successful candidate will have the following qualifications: 

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in theology/religion from an accredited SDA institution
  • Holds or is qualified to receive NAD teaching certification, Basic, Standard, or Professional, with a Secondary Endorsement in Religion
  • Has completed or can complete the Encounters Training Certification program for grades 9-12
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to plan and lead daily all-school chapels, field trips, meetings, etc.
  • Experience/willingness to provide spiritual counseling for students
  • Experience planning and leading worship activities
  • Ability to develop cooperative relationships with constituent pastors and church communities
  • Good classroom management skills
  • Comfortable working with current and emerging education and communication technologies (including Google Education programs and FACTS/RenWeb)
  • Willingness to perform other extracurricular duties as assigned.  (Class sponsorship, student homeroom, emergency subbing, and supervision of students.)
  • A team player
  • Maintains a spiritual presence and commitment
  • Has a passion for the development of young people and is on fire for Jesus Christ
  • Familiar with secondary religion curriculum
  • Possesses the skills of organization, follow-through, and communication

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • Additional endorsement and willingness to teach additional subjects
  • 3+ years teaching in an SDA educational institution
  • Being bilingual in English and Spanish would be a plus

The salary range for this position is $68,014-$84,230 based on North American Division certification, experience, and cost of living adjustment.
