Associate Superintendent – K–12 Education
Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists

 

Reporting Relationship

Reports directly to the Vice President for Education / Superintendent of Schools and serves as a key member of the Michigan Conference Office of Education leadership team. Works collaboratively with principals, teachers, pastors, and local school boards to strengthen Adventist education across Michigan.

The Associate Superintendent will embody these priorities, leading with conviction, professional excellence, and spiritual depth to ensure that every Michigan Conference school reflects both the character of Christ and the high standards of Adventist education.

 

Position Summary

The Associate Superintendent will serve as a spiritual, instructional, and administrative leader, providing guidance and support for the overall development of K–12 Adventist education within the Michigan Conference.

This role requires demonstrated expertise in curriculum and instruction—particularly at the elementary level, coupled with strong familiarity and experience in secondary education. The Associate Superintendent will collaborate with both elementary and secondary principals to support academic excellence, mission alignment, and school improvement across all levels.

The ideal candidate will bring both educational depth and technological fluency, recognizing how innovation—including responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI)—can enhance efficiency, creativity, and student learning outcomes. This individual must demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively, inspire others, and help schools achieve excellence within the mission and message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The role requires travel across the entirety of the Michigan Conference to visit schools and attend school board meetings as able.  Additionally, providing occasional sermons as requested for Education emphasis Sabbaths.

 

Key Responsibilities

Mission & Leadership

  • Champion and model the Key 3 priorities across all schools.
  • Support schools in integrating faith and learning through intentional spiritual programming and academic excellence.
  • Partner with the Superintendent to implement strategic goals for Michigan Conference education.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership development for principals and teachers at both elementary and secondary levels.
  • Assist schools in the areas of improvement, accreditation, compliance, and long-range planning.
  • Strengthen collaboration between schools, pastors, and local churches to ensure unified mission alignment.
  • Encourage innovative, mission-faithful approaches to curriculum, instruction, and school culture.

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Provide leadership in curriculum development and instructional improvement for both elementary and secondary programs, with an emphasis on coherence and quality throughout the K–12 continuum.
  • Guide schools in the implementation of NAD standards, ensuring both rigor and mission integration. 
  • Have knowledge and instructional competence in the philosophy and use of the Standards Based Learning approach.
  • Facilitate professional learning and instructional growth through workshops, coaching, and consultation.
  • Lead initiatives that promote data-informed instruction, student achievement, and continuous improvement.
  • Support teachers and principals in selecting and implementing curriculum resources that align with Adventist philosophy and meet high academic standards.

Technology, AI & Innovation

  • Provide leadership in the integration of educational technology for both instructional and administrative purposes.
  • Promote responsible and mission-aligned use of AI tools to enhance teaching, learning, and efficiency.
  • Support schools in leveraging technology for collaboration, assessment, and student engagement.
  • Stay informed on educational innovation and identify practical, ethical ways to apply it within Adventist schools.

Collaboration & Administration

  • Work collaboratively as part of the Conference education team, modeling strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.
  • Participate in principal and teacher evaluations, teacher certification, and accreditation visits.
  • Build positive partnerships with Conference departments, pastors, and local school boards.
  • Assist with budgeting, policy review, and communication among schools and the Office of Education.
  • Represent the Education Department at local regional and national meetings, conventions, School Boards, and committees.
Required Experience

Qualifications

Required

  • A committed member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in good standing who fully supports its message, mission, and lifestyle.
  • Deep alignment with the Key 3 of Michigan Conference education.
  • Proven experience in curriculum leadership and instructional development across elementary and secondary education.
  • Knowledgeable in educational technology and AI applications relevant to instructional design and school administration.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues, administrators, and educators.
  • Prior principal or equivalent administrative experience.
  • Master’s degree in Educational LeadershipCurriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field (required or in progress).
  • NAD teacher certification (minimum of Standard level and willing to obtain Professional status)

Preferred

  • Background in instructional coaching, teacher professional development, or educational innovation.
  • Evidence of effectiveness in strategic planning, leadership mentoring, and school improvement processes.

Terms of Employment

  • Full-time, 12-month position.
  • Compensation and benefits commensurate with education, experience, and denominational policy.
  • Reports to: Vice President for Education / Superintendent of Schools.
  • Travel throughout the Michigan Conference is required.
