Pay: Commensurate with experience and level of educational achievement according to Southern Adventist University’s salary structure for faculty.
Start Date: June 1, 2026

Job Summary: Southern Adventist University seeks an English professor to teach a range of writing courses including first-year and creative writing and may include professional or technical writing; courses may also include literature, language, rhetoric, theory, or other related areas. Specialization and professional experience in Creative Writing desired.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare and teach four courses (total of 12 credit hours) per semester plus one summer course (3 credit hours)
  • Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance records)
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours (minimum of 8 hours weekly)
  • Participate in up to 2-3 committees on campus as requested
  • Advise English majors, assisting students in making plans for timely degree completion
  • Participate in student/club/program/Southern activities on the weekend as scheduled throughout the year
  • Participate in all English Department activities, such as department meetings, social gatherings, and celebrations
  • Maintain competency in the field through professional development
  • Maintain standards of conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position
  • Take on additional duties as needed

Required Experience

Qualifications

  • PhD in English or MFA in Creative Writing preferred; Master’s degree in the discipline (e.g., English, Composition and Rhetoric, Professional Writing, Technical Writing) required
  • Significant experience teaching literature or writing (secondary and/or college level) or significant professional experience as a writer, editor, or related field
  • Experience teaching first-year writing

Must have a strongly expressed commitment to Jesus Christ, the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and an SDA church member in good and regular standing.
