Teaching responsibilities will include approximately 12 hours per semester. Solid business experience is desired along with strong written and oral communication skills. Preferred specialty in the Finance and Management areas. Courses currently assigned to this position include Business Finance, Principles of Accounting I, Financial Institutions and Markets, Sustainability Leadership, Macroeconomics, Cost and Managerial Accounting, Small Business Management, Project Management, and Business Ethics. Some classes are offered on an alternate year basis. The specific class mix may be adjusted based on skills and interests.
The advisor role - providing academic, professional, spiritual and personal advice as appropriate - is a critical role for program faculty. Approximately 15-25 students are assigned as advisees to each faculty member. Advisors provide assistance in selecting a major and emphasis, planning for the completion of graduation requirements on schedule, sharing ideas on appropriate internships and suggesting alternate actions in courses where the student is struggling.
As teachers, faculty are responsible to plan courses that include the desired elements at the appropriate level of difficulty. As stated in the mission statement, the Business program intentionally chooses to mix theory and practice in the classroom as appropriate. In many cases, the best learning happens through actively doing something related to the topic. Sample syllabi and other guiding documents will be provided to assist in planning. The program director, along with other faculty, is available for advice at any point along the way. A meeting with the program director to go over plans for the semester should take place no later than one week before classes begin. Course content will be largely predetermined the first time a course is taught, and after that there will be more latitude for changes in consultation with the Business program team.
